I am writing an article about data centers in small towns. I am exploring the impacts such as noise, vibrations, and energy requirements. Some of the inputs I have received (followed by reasonable questions) are:
- Vibrational Abnormalities: Felt at large distances away, there are concerns of health impacts from both sound and EMF vibrations. Are towns responsible or liable for chronic health conditions of residents?
- Enormous Energy Consumption: Cost and supply concerns. Who pays for the infrastructure…is there enough?
- Rising Electricity Costs: The rapid build-out of electrical infrastructure to support data centers can increase electricity rates for residential ratepayers.
- Unsustainable Water Usage: Data centers require millions of gallons of water daily for cooling, raising concerns in areas facing water stress. Is the water used for cooling returned to the local water table without damage or contamination?
- Noise Pollution: Residents living near data centers frequently complain about significant noise from cooling systems and backup generators.
- Minimal Local Job Creation: While construction creates temporary jobs, the operational data centers themselves require few permanent, on-site employees, leading communities to question the net economic benefit, especially when tax breaks are involved. Are promises made by the business owners fully transparent?
- Lack of Transparency: Tech companies often use non-disclosure agreements (NDA’s) to prevent local officials and residents from discussing project details, further aggravating community concerns. Are NDA’s really necessary or designed to hide less positive aspects of this industry?
